This self-paced class taught by Diana Wilson, CPC, CMC, provides material for students with prior coding knowledge using the ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 Coding Manuals. Upon course completion students will have: 1. Reviewed medical terminology in relation to the Integumentary System. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding techniques. 3. Understand the alphabetic and tabular structures of Volumes 1 and 2 of the ICD-9 book and the CPT-4 10000 series, with emphasis on the Integumentary System. 4. Be able to look up codes and learn the process of using coding books when coding diseases involving the Integumentary System. 5. Identify both primary and principal diagnoses. At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to correctly sequence codes and have a thorough understanding and knowledge when coding disorders of the Skin, Subcutaneous and Accessory Structures.

Course Description
This self study medical coding course will discuss the Integumentary System with focus on the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding manuals. Medical Terminology relating to the Integumentary System is also discussed to educate the student on this subject. The class will bring knowlege to students that want to pursue their knowledge when working for a Dermatologist or a Family Practioner.
The focus of this course for the experienced coder is to gain additional knowledge in specialty coding involving the skin. More than 150 coding scenarios for coding skin diseases and disorders and related procedures (CPT 10000 series) are provided to help the student continue his/her knowledge in the field of medical coding.
For the less advanced student, it is a course that would help gain knowledge of coding guidelines as implemented in the coding industry and to build confidence and speed when assigning codes.

Medical Terminology is an essential tool to help the student properly assign the correct code.
Lesson 2_Procedure Terminology - Integumentary System
Surgical Terminology related to the Integumentary System is important when assigning a CPT procedural code. It is suggested that the student review this lesson thoroughly prior to taking the coding lessons.
Lesson 3_ICD-9-Coding Overview
Reporting an ICD-9-CM code on a claim form justifies the medical necessity of procedures/services provided to patients. Rules are vital in assigning codes.
Lesson 4_ICD-9-CM Coding Burns
These are the ICD-9-CM Coding Guidelines for "burns" and a review of some CPT codes that are assigned for procedures pertaining to burns.
Lesson 5_Integumentary System - CPT Coding Format
The Integumentary System subsection in the Surgery Section of the coding Manual and the format is discussed in this lesson.
